“Soot-free” is technically impossible: The truth behind candle advertising – Quality seal as the only guarantee for clean burning

Markdorf, October 31 2025 – The Gütegemeinschaft Kerzen e.V. (Quality Association for Candles) warns consumers about misleading advertising claims in retail. Currently, candles are being marketed as “soot-free” – a claim that is physically impossible. The combustion of wax naturally produces soot, even if only in minimal amounts.
Dr. Frank Hanewinckel, Chairman of the Gütegemeinschaft Kerzen e.V., clarifies: “Anyone advertising with ‘soot-free’ is promising the impossible. Technically, it simply can’t be done. The goal is always to reduce soot formation to a harmless, invisible minimum. The only reliable guide for consumers is the RAL Quality Mark for Candles.”
Visibly clean thanks to the quality seal
Consumers who value particularly clean and low-smoke burning should consistently look for the internationally recognized RAL Quality Mark for Candles . Candles bearing this seal burn with minimal soot formation – provided they are used correctly.
The requirements of the Gütegemeinschaft Kerzen e.V. regarding soot development are strict:
  • Products are regularly and thoroughly tested by an independent testing institute.
  • The criteria for limiting soot and smoke emissions go far beyond the legal requirements of European legislation.
“The RAL Quality Mark is the most reliable compass in the candle jungle. It not only guarantees excellent burning properties but also protects health and the environment,” adds Dr. Hanewinckel. “We strongly advise against being misled by empty marketing promises and instead recommend trusting this proven quality label.”
About the Gütegemeinschaft Kerzen e.V.: The Gütegemeinschaft Kerzen e.V. is the neutral authority responsible for monitoring the RAL Quality Mark for candles.
