RAL Quality Mark for Candles confirmed as a guarantee of freedom from harmful substances
The latest ÖKO-TEST on tealights highlights the importance of the RAL Quality Mark for Candles as a reliable indicator of products free from harmful substances. Seven out of eight candles without this quality mark contained significant amounts of heavy metals such as lead and nickel, which can be released into indoor air when burned.
One product purchased from Temu performed particularly poorly:
Beeswax Tealights from Temu received the overall rating “inadequate”. The tealights were heavily contaminated with lead and nickel and exceeded the target values of the RAL Quality Mark. There was also an indication of contamination with foreign hydrocarbons (paraffin).
As a result, the product achieved the worst result in the beeswax tealight category and received the poorest rating for ingredients among all products tested within this type of wax.
In contrast, the RAL Quality Mark for Candles guarantees
consistently low levels of heavy metals and toxic organic pollutants, which the
test confirmed for most tealights bearing the seal. These performed
consistently “very good” and “good” in terms of ingredients. By comparison, 87.5%
of the tealights without the RAL Quality Mark showed conspicuous levels of
harmful substances.
